It's so hard to say so long
to all those things I've known so long

And I don't know where to start
You see all these things, they're all falling apart
They're all broken
They're all broken

So what I'm saying is I don't know if I have the heart
I don't know if I can part

It's so hard to tell them so long
It's been so hard so long
so hard so long to all those things that make feeling good feel wrong
 because they're broken
They're Broken

So long to all the tricks, the lies and the hurtful names
So long, so long to playing in those games that were broken
That were Broken
So long, So long, So long to all the tools in the shed
So long, So long, So long to all intentions well meant

And I don't want to let them go
You see they're the things that I thought that I'd always know
 But they're all broken
They're all broken

So what I'm saying is I don't know if I have the heart
I don't know if I can part

It's so hard to tell them so long
It's been so hard so long
so hard so long
to all those things that make feeling good feel wrong because they're broken
They're Broken

So long to all the tricks, the lies and the hurtful names
So long, so long to playing in those games that were broken
Broken comes from my moments in life where I have hit bottom.  The song is meant to, in a subtle way discredit the heavy laws that I once adhered to.  I grew up Catholic.  Irish Catholic., which meant to me that authority was absolute, no matter how corrupt.   The punishment for growing up outside of the rigid boundaries of the church and family meant intense shame and guilt.
I wanted to be careful in this song not to discredit individuals, but rather I wanted to discredit the principles and doctrines of my childhood by declaring them Broken.   I try to sing or listen to this song often because it helps.  It helps every time that I get cornered by guilt and feel that it's me who's broken, when in fact its not.
